If a contractor can't authenticate, check the information on file (name, email, TIN) and give them the correct details, or update your records. If a contractor refuses to use Wingspan, you're responsible for providing another way to receive their 1099, such as a mailed copy.

You're responsible for reviewing and processing contractor correction requests. Wingspan runs the correction process in the platform but can't make changes without your approval.

Working together

  • Set up a clear escalation path for issues that need both Wingspan and your team, and share information securely.
  • Never send full TINs, Social Security numbers, or other sensitive data by email or other unsecured channels. Follow the data protection laws that apply to you, such as GDPR and CCPA.
  • Wingspan support is mainly in English. Contractors who need other languages may need help from your team.
  • Wingspan can't email 1099 PDFs. Contractors open forms in the portal or request a mailed copy.

What Wingspan doesn't support

Wingspan's filing service supports U.S. 1099-NEC forms, U.S. 1099-MISC forms for Box 6 (medical and health care payments) only, and Canadian T4A forms.

U.S. form coverage

  • Other 1099 form types
  • Form 1042 for payments to foreign persons
  • Trust filings
  • Combined entity reporting or consolidated 1099 forms, even with supporting IRS statements
  • Revenue Procedure 99-50 statements

Geography and entities

  • Payers must have a U.S. address and an EIN.
  • 1099 forms are mailed only to U.S. addresses.
  • Multi-state filings aren't supported.
  • Mid-year entity changes can't be processed automatically. When payments must be split across two entities in the same year, a correction is needed. See Update and split tax forms.

U.S. state filing

  • State filings are supported for the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. Territory filings, such as Puerto Rico and Guam, must be handled outside Wingspan.
  • Wingspan files only with the single state selected for the form.
  • Wingspan doesn't evaluate state income thresholds, transaction counts, address requirements, payer or payee residency, or work location.
  • Forms with non-zero state withholding must be filed separately.
  • A single 1099 can't have more than one state filing.

See State filing.

Tax IDs and withholding

  • Social Security numbers (SSN) and Employer Identification Numbers (EIN) are accepted.
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) aren't supported.
  • Backup withholding isn't supported.
  • Federal and state withholding amounts must be zero.

Special circumstances

  • Legal services filings need specialized handling outside Wingspan, including filings for law firms even if they're incorporated.
  • Complex payment structures beyond standard contractor arrangements aren't supported.
  • Agricultural and fishing payments need specialized reporting that Wingspan doesn't provide.
  • Wingspan can't help with IRS CP2100 or CP2100A notices about name and TIN mismatches. Wingspan isn't a tax advisor and can't advise you on responding to these notices or on the B-Notice process that may follow.

Canadian filing

  • Only T4A forms are supported. T4A-NR forms for non-resident payments aren't.
  • T4A forms are mailed only to Canadian addresses.
  • Only basic income reporting (Box 048) is supported. See Canadian T4A filing.

International contractors

  • Tax filing covers U.S. and Canadian contractors only. Wingspan doesn't support tax filing for other countries, or reporting of other foreign-sourced income.
  • Wingspan doesn't calculate or withhold taxes for other jurisdictions, handle VAT, GST, or country-specific requirements, advise on tax residency across countries, support tax treaty applications, assess permanent establishment risk, calculate tax equalization or protection, manage international labor law compliance (including work permits and visas), or handle social security totalization agreements.

  • W-8BEN-E forms for entities aren't supported.
  • Special circumstances, reduced withholding rates, and W-8 exceptions or withholdings aren't supported.
  • FATCA compliance services aren't offered.
  • Mailing is limited to the United States, and to Canada for T4A forms.
