Understanding Your 1099-NEC from Your Company

Understanding 1099 Basics

What is a 1099-NEC tax form and do I need to file one?

A 1099-NEC reports income you've earned as a contractor or freelancer that isn't reported on a W-2. If you earned more than $600 from a company in a tax year, they must send a 1099-NEC to both you and the IRS. As a contractor, you don't need to file the 1099-NEC yourself - your payer handles this. However, you'll need this information to accurately report your income on your tax return.

What are 1099 forms?

1099 forms report various types of income that aren't included on a W-2. These forms are submitted to the IRS and often to state tax departments. For contractors and freelancers, the 1099-NEC specifically reports income earned through self-employment, contract work, or other non-employee compensation.

Will I receive a 1099-NEC?

You'll receive a 1099-NEC if you meet these criteria:

  • You earned $600 or more during the tax year (some states may require reporting for lower amounts)
  • Your business entity type requires 1099 reporting (S-Corps and C-Corps typically don't receive 1099s)
  • You provided valid W-9 information to your payer
  • Your email address on file is correct and able to receive communications

Using Wingspan

What is Wingspan and how can I use it?

Wingspan is a secure platform that helps you manage your tax documents with Your Company. Through Wingspan, you can:

  • Submit your W-9 information securely
  • Access your tax documents
  • Get direct support through a web-based portal

How does Wingspan send invitations?

Wingspan sends invitation emails from [email protected] to the email address you provided to Your Company. If you haven't received an invitation, you can request a new one using our invite request tool.

Why haven't I gotten an invitation from Wingspan?

There could be several reasons:

  • The invitation might be in your spam or junk folder
  • Your email address on file might be incorrect
  • You might have earned less than the reporting threshold
  • Your business type might not require 1099 reporting
  • The invitation might have been sent to a different email address

Accessing Your Documents

When will I get my 1099 form?

Your 1099-NEC will be available when submitted by your payer, usually by January 31st following the tax year. You'll receive instructions for accessing your form online through Wingspan, or you can request a mailed copy during signup.

How will I know when my 1099 form is ready?

If you've opted for electronic delivery, Wingspan will email you when your form is available. You can then log in to your account to access it.

How do I access my 1099 tax forms?

You can access your forms at https://my.wingspan.app/member/tax-documents. Remember:

  • Wingspan only has access to 1099s from years when your payer used our platform
  • For previous years' 1099s filed through other methods, contact your payer directly
  • Forms are typically available by January 31st of each year

How do I log in to my account?

Visit https://my.wingspan.app/1099/sign-in and enter your email address. You'll receive a 6-digit verification code on your phone to complete the login process.

Making Changes and Corrections

What if there's a mistake on my 1099 form?

If you notice any errors (amount, address, name, or tax ID), you can request corrections through Wingspan using our correction request process. Note that:

  • Only your payer can approve and process corrections
  • Wingspan support cannot make these changes directly
  • Your payer will review and decide whether to approve the correction

How can I see the payments included in my 1099?

You can review all payments included in your 1099 total within the Wingspan app and download a CSV of these payments. This helps you verify the accuracy of your 1099 amount.

What if I don't agree with the amount on my 1099 form?

If you disagree with the amount, you should:

  1. Review the detailed payment history in your Wingspan account
  2. Submit a correction request through Wingspan, specifically noting which payments should or shouldn't be included
  3. Wait for your payer to review and approve the correction

Account Setup and Security

Why does Wingspan need my Social Security Number?

If you don't have an EIN, Wingspan needs your Social Security Number to properly file your 1099-NEC with the IRS. We maintain SOC2 and PCI compliance to protect your sensitive information.

Can I choose not to give Wingspan my Social Security Number?

Yes, if you have an EIN and business name, you can provide those instead of your Social Security Number.

What if I have multiple accounts?

If you receive payments under different entities or tax IDs, you'll need a separate Wingspan account for each one. Each account will have its own W-9 information and tax documents.

What happens if I don't sign up for Wingspan?

If you don't sign up and your payer has W-9 information on file, your 1099 will be mailed to the address on file. However:

  • You won't be able to request corrections without a Wingspan account
  • If your payer doesn't have your W-9 information, you must sign up and provide it
  • Failing to provide W-9 information may result in payment withholding or legal penalties
